Understanding Heat Stress and OSHA Regulations: How to Protect Your Employees and Ensure Compliance
After experiencing significant product loss due to unexpected power outages, Keeneland Hospitality implemented Sonicu to gain real-time visibility across all refrigeration units. Today, the team can monitor every asset remotely, respond instantly to alerts, and protect high-value inventory stored for months at a time.
Keeneland stores high-value food inventory across walk-in coolers and freezers year round, often for extended periods. Without real-time visibility, issues like power disruptions can quickly lead to significant losses. Sonicu provides continuous monitoring and instant alerts across every unit, allowing the team to respond quickly, protect inventory, and maintain confidence even when facilities are not actively staffed.
At Keeneland, excellence is more than a tradition. It is an expectation. Known worldwide for its premier thoroughbred racing events, Keeneland hosts two major race meets each year — the Spring Race Meet in April and the Fall Race Meet in October — welcoming hundreds of thousands of guests. Beyond the track, the organization delivers an elevated hospitality experience with extensive fine dining and concession offerings that operate at a massive scale.
At the heart of this operation is an essential priority: protecting valuable food inventory every day of the year. That’s where Sonicu comes in. By providing precise, real-time monitoring of all walk-in coolers and freezers, the system ensures that even during off-season events or long-term storage, valuable products remain safe and compliant.
Keeneland has Sonicu meters installed in all primary walk-in coolers and freezers that store product throughout the year. While one location serves food continuously, the campus also supports sales events and banquets outside of race seasons. During those times, large quantities of meat and pastry products may be frozen and stored safely for months at a time.
With such significant inventory on hand, often held long-term, reliable temperature monitoring is essential.

Before implementing Sonicu, the team faced a serious challenge: unexpected power losses to walk-in units. In multiple instances, product was lost. One event alone resulted in the loss of six figures’ worth of premium meat.
The question became clear. How could they ensure enough warning time to protect inventory, relocate product, or dispatch repairs before a minor issue became a major financial setback?
With Sonicu, they gained the visibility and control required to prevent another costly loss. This transformed a reactive challenge into a proactive strategy.

Now in their third year of using the system, Keeneland Racetrack describes the experience as simply fantastic.
“The monitoring is extremely accurate and regular, and the ways that alerts can be so incredibly customized is beyond useful for any environment that requires oversight of temperature,” said Skylar Kiss, Keeneland’s Micros Programmer. “The system does not require constant maintenance, which is a massive draw for us. Once I had everything configured and operational, the system handled itself.”
As the team member responsible for programming and maintaining the system, Kiss oversees device configuration, monitors performance, educates operations staff on alert usage, and coordinates rapid response when notifications occur. Once implemented, the platform required minimal ongoing maintenance, a major advantage for a campus operating at this scale.
Today, the team can oversee every monitored unit from a single webpage and mobile app, with alerts distributed instantly to key personnel.
Hubs: Enterprise LTE Hubs – Ethernet primary, cellular failover
Sensors: 12 S-T Temperature Sensors
Setup: Wireless S-Series network monitoring all key refrigeration assets
Features: Real-time alerts, customizable notifications, minimal ongoing maintenance, remote monitoring via web or mobile app
The impact has extended well beyond loss prevention.
Kitchen staff no longer need to schedule off-season manual temperature checks. Product stored for weeks or months can be trusted to remain safe without daily physical oversight. This has significantly improved operational efficiency.
The maintenance team has also gained powerful visibility into equipment performance. By reviewing temperature fluctuation trends caused by weather shifts, power irregularities, or general wear and tear, they can now anticipate service needs instead of reacting to failures. That shift from reactive to proactive maintenance has reduced risk and improved equipment reliability.
One surprising benefit that Kiss noted has been the ability to analyze duty cycles of refrigeration units in detail. Understanding how frequently and intensely units run has revealed opportunities to streamline loading and unloading processes, improving overall operational flow.
Additionally, the snooze functionality within alerts helps prevent alert fatigue. When an issue is being investigated, notifications can be temporarily paused without compromising oversight. This allows teams to stay focused and responsive without feeling overwhelmed.
For Keeneland, Sonicu has become more than a monitoring tool. It is a safeguard for both product and reputation.
“Sonicu is a vital tool for any environment that wants to alleviate the stress of losing product or inventory due to a dysfunctional cooler/freezer. An entire campus can be checked for consistency and status from a single webpage or mobile app, and any potential issues can be alerted to an entire team for a response time of minutes, rather than hours or even days before someone notices the high thermostat. Thank you for the peace of mind.”
For an organization entrusted with delivering world-class experiences, that peace of mind makes all the difference.
